When feeding, speaking, or sleeping just isn’t going right

At Kidz and Teen Dental + Orthodontics, we evaluate and treat tongue ties and lip ties for patients of every age, from newborns in the first weeks of life through teenagers and adults. As an experienced tongue tie release provider serving families with frenectomies in Carrollton and McKinney, we approach every case with care, precision, and a calm environment.

What is a frenectomy?

A frenectomy is a quick procedure that releases a tight or restrictive frenum, the small piece of tissue connecting the tongue to the floor of the mouth (lingual frenectomy) or the upper lip to the gums (labial frenectomy).

We perform every Carrollton & McKinney frenectomy surgery using a soft-tissue dental laser, which is faster, more precise, and significantly more comfortable than the traditional scissors method. Most laser frenectomies take just a few minutes, and many babies are nursing again within an hour.

Signs your baby may have a lip or tongue tie

For infants, the signs often show up first in feeding and sleep:

  • Painful or damaged nipples during nursing
  • Difficulty latching, or losing latch repeatedly
  • A clicking or smacking sound while feeding
  • Long feeds that don't seem to satisfy
  • Poor weight gain or "failure to thrive" concerns
  • Reflux, gassiness, or fussiness during and after feeds
  • A heart-shaped tongue tip when crying
  • An upper lip that won't flange outward when latching
  • Falling asleep at the breast but waking shortly after
Bottle-fed babies can have ties too. Look for milk dribbling out, gulping, slow feeds, or the same digestive issues.

Signs of tongue tie or lip tie in older children

In toddlers, kids, and teens, signs often look different:

  • Speech that's hard to understand, especially with sounds like "L," "R," "T," and "D"
  • Trouble cleaning food off teeth with the tongue
  • Difficulty eating certain textures (slow eating, gagging on solids)
  • A noticeable gap between the upper front teeth
  • Mouth breathing or snoring
  • Restless or low-quality sleep
  • Recessed lower jaw or recurring orthodontic concerns
  • Headaches, jaw tension, or neck tension
If you’ve heard from a speech therapist, lactation consultant, ENT, or pediatrician that a tie or tongue & lip tie revision might be needed, an evaluation is worth scheduling.

What a laser frenectomy involves

For infants:

We do a thorough evaluation of how the tongue and lip move, how your baby latches, and how the tie may be affecting feeding.

If a frenectomy is recommended, the procedure itself takes just a few minutes. Your baby is swaddled and held comfortably while we use a precise dental laser to release the restricted tissue.

We walk you through aftercare — including gentle stretches to prevent reattachment — and answer every question you have.

Many families notice improvement in feeding within hours. Some take a few days or weeks of practice with the new range of motion.

For older children:

The process is similar, with the addition of topical numbing and, when appropriate, mild sedation to keep your child comfortable. Healing typically takes a week or two, and we provide clear post-care instructions.

Why we use a laser instead of scissors

Soft-tissue lasers offer real advantages over the older scissors technique:

  • Less bleeding: the laser seals tissue as it works
  • Lower infection risk: for the same reason
  • More precise: we release only what needs to be released
  • Faster healing: with less discomfort for your child
  • Shorter procedure time: often just a few minutes

For most families, this is the difference between a stressful surgical visit and a quiet, manageable appointment.

Working alongside your care team

Lip ties and tongue ties don’t exist in isolation. A successful release is usually part of a broader plan that includes the right professionals supporting your child.

For infants, we work closely with:

  • Lactation consultants (IBCLCs)
  • Pediatricians
  • Speech and feeding therapists
  • Bodyworkers, when indicated (chiropractic, craniosacral, occupational therapy)

For older children, we often coordinate with:

  • Speech-language pathologists
  • Myofunctional therapists
  • Orthodontists
  • ENTs and sleep specialists

We’re happy to coordinate with your existing team and refer to trusted providers in the Carrollton and McKinney area if you don’t have one yet.

Why families bring babies and kids to us for frenectomy

Treating tongue ties and lip ties takes more than a piece of equipment. It takes patience, experience, and a calm environment where parents feel supported.

We’re known for:

  • Extensive experience treating ties from newborns to teens
  • Multiple comfort options for older children, including sedation
  • Clear, judgment-free communication with parents
  • A practice built around the needs of nervous and special-needs kids
  • Honest evaluations — we'll tell you if we don't think a release is needed

We don’t push procedures. We help you understand what’s happening, and then we let you decide.

Ready to check for a tongue or lip tie?

If you think your baby or child may have a tongue or lip tie, an evaluation is the best place to start. We’ll listen, take a closer look, and give you a clear recommendation — whether that means treatment, waiting, or exploring other causes first.
